Tesamorelin 10mg vial
Tesamorelin: What It Does & Potential Benefits
Tesamorelin is a synthetic analogue of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH). Rather than being growth hormone itself, it stimulates the pituitary gland to increase the body's natural production of growth hormone, which in turn raises IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1). FDA Access Data+1
Its most established effect is on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) — the deeper abdominal fat surrounding internal organs. This is different from ordinary subcutaneous fat, which sits underneath the skin.
Main potential benefits
- Reduction in visceral abdominal fat: This is the strongest evidence for tesamorelin. Clinical trials have found reductions in visceral fat of roughly 10–20% over 6–12 months in studied populations. PubMed+1
- Improved abdominal/body composition:Studies have reported reductions in waist circumference and trunk fat while generally preserving subcutaneous abdominal fat. PubMed
- Increase in IGF-1: Because tesamorelin stimulates the GH pathway, IGF-1 rises substantially during treatment. This is part of the mechanism through which it affects body composition. PubMed
- Possible improvement in liver fat: A randomized trial in people with HIV-associated abdominal fat accumulation found a modest reduction in liver fat alongside the reduction in visceral fat. PubMed
- Potential improvements in certain lipid markers: Clinical studies have observed reductions in triglycerides and improvements in some cholesterol-related measures. PubMed+1
- Possible increase in lean mass: More recent pooled evidence has found an increase in lean body mass in studied HIV-associated lipodystrophy populations, although tesamorelin should not be thought of as a conventional muscle-building drug. PubMed
How it works
The basic pathway is:
Tesamorelin → GHRH receptors → increased natural GH release → increased IGF-1 → changes in fat metabolism/body composition
One of the interesting characteristics of tesamorelin is that its effects are particularly pronounced on visceral fat, rather than simply causing generalized weight loss.
